Why We Choose Silicone-Free Hair Care

At Calia, we’ve always kept things pretty simple: create effective hair care using thoughtfully chosen, naturally sourced ingredients and leave out the things we don’t feel are necessary.

Silicones are one of them.

You’ll find silicones in a lot of conventional shampoos, conditioners and styling products. They’re often added because they coat the outside of the hair, helping it feel smoother, look shinier and appear less frizzy.

Which sounds great, right?

The thing is, that silky feeling is coming from a coating on the hair rather than necessarily from adding moisture or nourishment to the hair itself.

So, what are silicones?

Silicones are synthetic polymers used in many hair care products to create slip, softness and shine. Some wash away relatively easily, while others can build up on the hair over time depending on the formula and your hair care routine.

For some people, that buildup can leave the hair feeling heavy, dull or coated, especially when silicone-based products are used regularly.

That’s simply not the approach we’ve ever wanted to take with our formulas.

Rather than relying on a synthetic coating to make hair feel soft, we prefer to use botanical oils, plant-based ingredients and naturally derived conditioners that help support softness, moisture and manageability.

Can your hair be soft and shiny without silicones?

Absolutely.

Silicone-free hair care doesn’t mean sacrificing the things you love about a good conditioner.

Our Intensive Conditioner, for example, is made to deeply condition dry or thirsty hair, while our Leave-In Conditioner adds lightweight moisture and helps with softness and detangling.

No silicones required.

It’s also why people making the switch to natural hair care sometimes notice their hair feels a little different at first. If you’ve been using products that heavily coat the hair, it may take a little time to adjust to how your hair naturally feels without that layer sitting on top.

For us, it really comes back to our overall philosophy.

We want our hair care to be simple, effective and made with ingredients chosen to genuinely care for the hair and scalp. If we can create soft, shiny, manageable hair without relying on silicones, we’d rather leave them out altogether.
